Serotonin and ADHD

Serotonin's link to ADHD is less direct than dopamine's, but it shapes mood, impulse control and sleep — three areas that overlap heavily with everyday ADHD experience.

What serotonin actually does

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter mostly associated with emotional regulation, but its reach extends further:

  • Mood stability — serotonin helps regulate mood and is a key target of many antidepressant medications.
  • Impulse control — serotonin signalling in the prefrontal cortex contributes to the ability to pause before acting.
  • Sleep regulation — serotonin is a precursor to melatonin, the hormone that governs the sleep-wake cycle.
  • Appetite and digestion — the majority of the body's serotonin is actually produced in the gut, where it helps regulate digestion.

The serotonin link to ADHD

Compared with dopamine, the evidence connecting serotonin directly to ADHD is more mixed and still developing. What research does suggest:

  • Serotonin and dopamine systems interact — serotonin can modulate dopamine release, so disruptions in one system can influence the other.
  • Impulsivity and emotional dysregulation, both common in ADHD, are areas where serotonin plays a well-established general role, even though ADHD itself is not classified as a serotonin disorder.
  • ADHD frequently co-occurs with conditions more strongly tied to serotonin, such as anxiety and depression, which may partly explain why serotonin-related symptoms often show up alongside ADHD.
  • Poor sleep — common in ADHD — can itself lower serotonin availability the next day, creating a cycle where sleep problems and attention problems reinforce one another.

Why this matters day to day: the emotional ups and downs, low frustration tolerance, and disrupted sleep that many people with ADHD experience are not "extra" problems layered on top — they may be connected to the same broader neurotransmitter picture that includes serotonin.

Where serotonin and dopamine overlap

The two systems are not separate silos. Serotonin neurons project into dopamine-rich areas of the brain and can either dampen or support dopamine activity depending on the circuit involved. This is part of why a strategy like regular exercise or consistent sleep can support both systems at once, rather than targeting just one.

A note on nuance: serotonin is genuinely important for wellbeing, but it is not accurate to describe ADHD as caused by "low serotonin" the way it is sometimes described in relation to depression. Treat any single-neurotransmitter explanation of ADHD with some caution — the reality is a network of interacting systems.
